Boat Owner Questions

Short answers to common sailboat cleaning, detailing, pressure washing, rigging, and boat care questions from Sail Ready Services in West Island Montreal.

Boat Cleaning Questions

How much does professional boat cleaning cost?

Pricing is quoted per boat and depends on length, condition, and scope. Small sailboats often start in the low hundreds; full details cost more.

How often should I get my boat professionally cleaned?

Most West Island owners do a spring clean, mid-season refresh, and fall wash before haulout. Active racers benefit from monthly cockpit and deck cleanings.

What's the best way to clean a boat without damaging it?

Boat-safe biodegradable cleaners, soft brushes, low-pressure rinsing, and careful section-by-section work. Household degreasers and abrasive pads should be avoided.

Boat Detailing Questions

How much does boat detailing cost?

Detailing pricing depends on hull length, gelcoat condition, and whether wet sanding is needed. A written quote is provided after a quick look at the boat.

What's included in professional boat detailing?

A typical detail covers exterior wash, deck and cockpit deep clean, hull polish and wax, stainless polish, canvas and cushion wipe-down, and interior tidy-up.

How often should I detail my boat?

Most sailboats benefit from a full detail once a year, usually at launch or before a major event, with a lighter polish or wax touch-up mid-season.

Boat Pressure Washing Questions

How much does it cost to pressure wash a boat?

Pricing is quoted per boat based on hull length, growth level, access, and yard rules. Small trailered sailboats are usually a quick job; larger keelboats take longer.

Can you pressure wash a boat hull without damage?

Yes — with controlled pressure, the right nozzle, safe working distance, and surface judgement. Aggressive blasting on gelcoat, decals, and older fittings is avoided.

What PSI do I need to clean my boat effectively?

Nozzle choice, distance, and detergent dwell time matter more than raw PSI. Sail Ready Services uses a 3200 PSI machine but rarely at full pressure.

Sailboat Rigging Questions

How often should you replace sailboat rigging?

Standing rigging on cruising sailboats is commonly replaced every 10–15 years, or sooner if visual checks reveal cracks, corrosion, or broken strands. Sail Ready Services does not replace standing rigging.

How much does it cost to replace standing rigging on a sailboat?

Full standing rigging replacement is quoted by a certified rigger and varies by boat size and fittings. SRS refers owners to qualified marine riggers for that work.

Should I DIY my sailboat rigging or hire a professional?

Owners can safely handle a lot of running rigging work. Standing rigging replacement, tuning, and mast work belong with a certified rigger. SRS helps in between with setup, visual checks, and Loos gauge tension checks.

Sailboat Maintenance Questions

How much does sailboat maintenance cost per year?

A common rough figure is 5–10% of the boat's value per year including storage and insurance. Direct maintenance for West Island trailerable and small keelboats is often much lower.

What sailboat maintenance can I do myself?

Cleaning, cockpit rinsing, cabin tidying, waxing, running rigging inspection, and pre-sail checks are all owner-friendly. Standing rigging, engine, and electrical work belong with pros.

How often does a sailboat need maintenance?

At minimum, launch and haulout each season. Active sailors benefit from monthly or biweekly check-ins during the season.

Boat Watch & Ready Plan Questions

What is a Boat Watch & Ready Plan?

A recurring monthly boat care plan with routine visual check-ins, photo updates, cockpit and line organization, and pre-sail readiness support.

Is it a subscription that auto-bills me?

No. Care plans are quoted and invoiced — there is no automated recurring billing. Any extra materials or approved small jobs are billed after the owner confirms.

What's not included in a care plan?

Certified rigging surveys, structural inspections, engine work, electrical work, and standing rigging replacement are not included. SRS refers those to qualified marine professionals.
