Sailboat Rigging Setup & Visual Checks

Running rigging setup, visual rigging checks, Loos gauge tension checks, mast setup support, and sail setup — from a former BDYC bosun and sailing instructor.

Running Rigging Setup

Halyards, sheets, reefing lines, control lines, and cockpit organization set up so they work the way you sail. Lines routed cleanly, labeled where useful, and coiled so the boat looks and works the way it should.

Visual Rigging Checks

A careful visual look at the standing rig, terminals, chainplates, spreaders, and mast fittings — from what can be seen safely at deck level and on step-up. Anything unusual is documented with photos and shared with the owner along with a clear next step.

Loos Gauge Tension Checks

Cap shroud and lower tension checked with a Loos gauge and compared against manufacturer or class guidance where available. Useful before the season, after a big blow, or if the mast has moved and the boat isn't pointing the way it used to.

Caliper Checks on Swaged Fittings

Swaged terminals can crack or deform as they age. Where appropriate, Sail Ready Services checks visible swages with calipers and looks for cracks, corrosion, and hairline defects. Anything suspicious is referred to a certified rigger — SRS documents, we don't guess.

Mast Setup Support

Hands-on help around mast stepping and unstepping day — pre-step rig prep, on-the-day coordination at the yard, and post-step tidy and check. Calm, organized mast days for owners who don't want the day to turn into a scramble.

Sail and Boom Setup

Main and jib bent on properly, reefing lines rove and tested, boom vang, topping lift, and outhaul set up correctly, and sail covers fitted. If the boat is new to you, we walk through the setup together so you can do it yourself next time.

Owner Support and Learning

Many owners want to understand their rig, not just have it worked on. Sail Ready Services is happy to walk you through what we're doing, why, and what to check yourself between visits. That's the sailing-instructor side of the business.

Scope Boundary

Sail Ready Services provides running rigging setup, visual rigging checks, Loos gauge tension checks, caliper checks on swaged fittings where appropriate, mast setup support, sail setup, and owner assistance. SRS does not provide certified rigging surveys, structural inspections, engineering opinions, or standing rigging replacement. Serious defects, chainplate concerns, cracked fittings, corrosion, broken strands, electrical issues, engine issues, or safety-critical repairs should be reviewed by a qualified marine professional. SRS is happy to help coordinate that referral.

Recent work

Real SRS Example

A First 18 SE owner needed help with sail setup, boom setup, rigging preparation, and a visual inspection-style report. Sail Ready Services reviewed the setup, helped organize the boat, documented the condition with photos, and provided practical next steps so the owner could feel more confident getting back on the water.

Frequently Asked Questions

A common industry guideline for standing rigging on cruising sailboats is roughly 10–15 years, or sooner in harsh conditions, after a rig failure, or if visual checks reveal cracks, broken strands, corrosion, or bent fittings. Running rigging is replaced when it shows wear, glazing, chafe, or loss of strength. Sail Ready Services can do visual checks and recommend when a qualified rigger should take a closer look — SRS does not replace standing rigging.

Service Area

Sail Ready Services works with sailboat owners at West Island yacht clubs and nearby clubs and marinas, including Baie-D'Urfé Yacht Club (BDYC), Pointe-Claire, Beaconsfield, Dorval, Île-Perrot, Lord Reading, Royal St. Lawrence, and nearby clubs by request.
